The ESP Code provides requirements for an enhanced programme of inspections during surveys of single-hull and double-hull bulk carriers and of single-hull and double-hull oil tankers, in accordance with the provisions of SOLAS regulation XI-1/2 and in line with the IACS related series.

Since their adoption, the Guidelines have been frequently updated and brought in line with regulatory and technological developments as well as with current practice, in particular with the relevant IACS Unified Requirements.

As per Resolution MSC.412(97), amendments to ESP Code were adopted to clarify the scope of close up survey and thickness measurement for bulk carriers and oil tankers. Close up survey and thickness measurement should be carried out as given in annexes 1 and 2.

More specifically, in any kind of survey, i.e. renewal, intermediate, annual or other surveys having the scope of the foregoing ones, for structures in areas where close-up surveys are required, thickness measurements, when required by annex 2, should also be carried out simultaneously with close-up surveys.

Additionally, various paragraphs are replaced to the following annexes:

-Annex A, Part A (Surveys of Bulk Carriers having single-side skin construction)

-Annex A, Part B (Surveys of Bulk Carriers having double-side skin construction)

-Annex B, Part A (Surveys of Double-hull oil tankers)

-Annex B, Part B (Surveys of oil tankers other than double-hull tankers)
